Moving in the x direction is indicated when the line showing the direction of translation of the text object in the workspace turns red. This is very useful in this case as we don’t want to move in the z direction, only in the xy plane. Note that when you are using this feature it can move in any direction you want, but the program will also snap to the x, y and z axis when you approach moving in these direction. To move the text around, use the ‘Move’ feature. Like before if you don’t have them available you’ll need to enable the toolbar, which in this case is the ‘getting started’ toolbar. This can be changed using the move and scale features. You may find now that the text isn’t the right size or in the correct position. This is so as you have a reference in 3d space as to where it is and can be moved from here. It is best to place this initially at the origin. Once you generate the text you have the immediate option of putting it into the workspace. Once you are happy with the settings you can hit place which generates the text in the workspace. To be flush with the coin it is best to keep this around the 1.5mm mark. This is how far the text will be extruded in the z axis. This will allow you to edit a value field below that of the height field. To make it 3d you need to make sure the extrude option is checked. A value of 10mm is a good starting point but this can be scaled later if it is not correct. The text box also has a value labelled as height, this is a measure of how tall the text is, in terms of xy axis. This is because the printer will struggle to print the small details if you have a large amount of characters in your text. It is recommended that you keep the text as short as possible, your initials would be a good example. This is the text that we will place on the coin. You’re not here because you want a weather app that’ll tell you the weather and nothing else. Also, they give you much more in the entry level version than they did prior. The day and hourly breakdowns are really nicely executed as well and I love seeing the temperature graphs. They even have Wikipedia break downs of wind, precipitation, moon phases, etc! It’s fascinating. I’m spending twice as much time on CARROTWeather now because it’s just fun to use (maybe I’m just a nerd). For now, the main takeaway here is that they are presenting weather-related data here that we ACTUALLY care about, that other apps aren’t. It seems they’ve adjusted that algorithm, and we’ll see if it’s improved. I found the old version to be a little light on the data I was seeking, and the precipitation forecasts wildly unreliable in my area. Henry Luttikhuitzen and Dorothy Verkerk’s Snyder’s Medieval Art (Pearson, 2005) provides a comprehensive survey, although it is less focused on the contextual and cultural analysis of the artifacts. Roger Stalley’s Early Medieval Architecture (Oxford University Press, 1999) is a survey of extant architecture from the Carolingian to Romanesque period, although he mostly focuses on British and north-western European examples. Lawrence Nees’s Early Medieval Art (Oxford University Press, 2002) provides a wonderful overview of the non-architectural arts of the period all organized into concise thematic units. In addition, later buildings replaced most architecture, such as churches and palaces, and many other artifacts produced from wood, leather, and other natural materials did not survive in the northern climate.Ī great place to start is the Oxford History of Art Series books. Also, by stressing that the archaeological evidence surviving from this period is very patchy, consisting mainly of small portable and non-perishable objects recovered from burial sites, students will be less likely to judge this period as “dark ages” devoid of artistic and cultural production and innovation. This will help students to understand that early Medieval art was not purely aesthetic, but also a symbol that could proclaim one’s status, education, identity, and culture. Originally pagan, the settlers gradually converted to Christianity and adopted many of the Roman customs and laws, which helped to unify these heterogeneous populations.Ī few themes to stress throughout the lecture include art as a form of status symbol, the fusion of Mediterranean Christian and native pagan traditions, and the selective survival of artifacts. In the following centuries, these various groups merged providing foundations for today’s European nations. ![]() This constant movement and migration happened primarily during the fourth and fifth centuries. Other settlers from Central Asia chose to establish their own communities in Europe to challenge the previous structures. Although some were initially viewed as barbarians (foreigners) by the Romans, the northern settlers quickly adapted to Roman community life with many of them rising to prominent positions. These major societal, cultural, and artistic changes resulted from the fusion of three important traditions: Graeco-Roman heritage, the traditions of various people living or newly settled in Northern Europe, and a relatively new Christian faith. ![]() The period after the dissolution of Roman Empire and up to the year 1000 was an incredibly formative period of western medieval art culture, a time of great innovations and production of unique artifacts. Use this as an opportunity to correct this unjust, but widely held view. Oftentimes, influenced by popular culture, they simply think of this period as mysterious “dark ages.” You may take a quick poll to check how many of them agree with this label and then discuss what ideas they associate with it. Many of your students may have a very foggy idea about the historical and cultural developments in the West prior to year 1000. ![]() ![]() If you zoom in far enough, you can see a faint neon glow.

But we were thinking this should go here and what is that over there and what about this character…’”Īnd so the algorithm’s recommendations were combined with human input, which also included the French government publishing the proposed layout for public comment. “We created this optimization model process, essentially listened to what the algorithm said was the best design, and said ‘Ta-da! Here is the keyboard!” Feit says. They also put together a large crowdsourcing study in which they asked 900 people to type letter combinations to show them how people physically type. Performance was key, so they wanted similar symbols grouped together, and finally, the keyboard needed to be ergonomic and easy to use.įeit and her team already had years of research on using algorithms for optimization, and it was relatively simple to collect datasets of billions of characters taken from not only French newspapers and legal texts, but also social media posts and Wikipedia entries. That’s also why the researchers built a “cost function” to quantify how far away new placement of characters would be compared with the standard keyboard. The French government had given them four key parameters: The letter characters had to be kept as they were on the current AZERTY keyboard, to avoid too big a change for users. Photo courtesy of Anna Maria FeitĮasy enough, Feit and her team thought. ![]() “They wanted to counteract that trend.”Īnna Maria Feit poses in Paris with the new AZERTY keyboard. ![]() “Especially younger people don’t type French in the proper way, to the point where many of them think the accents are no longer needed,” Feit says. It’s easier to write an E or an A rather than a multi-key command to create É or Á. The problem, France explained to Feit and her team when they began in 2016, is inherent in the way young French people type. The challenge sparked work from an international collaboration led by Feit’s team and included linguists, economists, keyboard manufacturers and more stakeholders. “We saw it as a big chance to bring our research to life and make use of it in a public project,” says Anna Maria Feit, the lead researcher. A team at Finland’s Aalto University read about it in the news and, after consulting with a postdoc on their team from France, they seized the opportunity to apply their work in computational methods to the design. The project began in 2015, when the French government decided it wanted a new keyboard standard. Symbols such as and #, which have come into greater use in the age of Twitter and Facebook, have been moved to more accessible locations. It includes common French characters like œ and É, as well as 60 other new characters not included on the existing keyboard. The new AZERTY standard developed for France’s Ministry of Culture by AFNOR, the benchmark French body for voluntary standards, used a predictive algorithm to design a keyboard that is more intuitive and ergonomic for French speakers than the current AZERTY keyboard. Now researchers have harnessed the power of the algorithm to create a new keyboard standard for French typists-and they say it’s easily adaptable to design new keyboards for all kinds of European languages. But the keys traditionally used were designed for English special characters in other languages, like letters with accent marks, are difficult to access or missing altogether. Billions of people use keyboards daily, all across the globe. ![]() |
